US airlines publish in inches; we show their own figures. Basic Economy is where the rules differ most: United and WestJet UltraBasic allow a personal item only on most routes, Air Canada on some.

Australia: cabin baggage sizes
Weight is what catches people out here: 7 kg for both items on Jetstar Starter fares and Qantas international Economy. Jetstar changes its rules on 2 February 2027.

Three things that cost people a gate fee
- The "free" bag is not the same size everywhere. A 20 cm-deep backpack is a free under-seat bag at Ryanair and easyJet, but too deep for British Airways, Air France or KLM's 15 cm personal item.
- Weight is often shared. Transavia and Volotea cap both items at 10 kg together; Air France and KLM at 12 kg; Jetstar and Qantas international Economy at 7 kg.
- "Cabin bag" does not mean "included". Ryanair, Frontier and Wizz Air sell the overhead bag as an extra on their basic fares; United Basic Economy and WestJet UltraBasic leave it out on most routes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the standard cabin bag size?
There is no single standard. In the United States the common limit is 22 × 14 × 9 inches (56 × 35 or 36 × 23 cm: Delta, United, American). In Europe most airlines use 55 × 40 × 20 cm (Ryanair, Vueling, TUI) or 55 × 35 × 25 cm (Air France, KLM); easyJet, British Airways and Jet2 allow 56 × 45 × 25 cm. Australian carriers use 56 × 36 × 23 cm.
Is 40 × 30 × 20 cm a personal item everywhere?
No. It is the free under-seat bag at Ryanair, Wizz Air, Vueling, Volotea, Transavia, Jet2 and TUI, but Air France, KLM and Lufthansa limit the personal item to 40 × 30 × 15 cm, and British Airways too (40 × 30 × 15 cm). easyJet is more generous: 45 × 36 × 20 cm.
Do wheels and handles count?
Yes. easyJet, British Airways, Jet2, American, United, Southwest, Air Canada and most others say so explicitly, and the sizer at the gate measures the whole bag. Measure it packed: a full front pocket often adds an inch.
What is 55 × 40 × 20 cm in inches?
21.6 × 15.7 × 7.8 inches (rounded down). It is slightly shorter than the US 22 × 14 × 9 in limit, but wider and thinner: a US-size roller (56 × 36 × 23 cm) is too deep for Ryanair.
Will cabin bags become free in the EU?
Not yet. The reform of the EU air passenger rights regulation guarantees one free personal item and requires fares to be shown including hand luggage from the start of booking. The act was signed on 16 September 2026 but, as of 1 October 2026, it has not been published in the Official Journal; the rules apply about a year after publication. Status and sources.
What happens if my bag is too big at the gate?
It goes in the hold for a fee that is higher than at booking. Published examples: £60 for a large cabin bag added at the airport with easyJet; €/£70–75 for an oversize bag at Ryanair's gate; CA/US$65–78 handling fee on Air Canada Basic fares.
